Happy 65th Birthday to Us!
As a small family company, we are proud to be celebrating 65 years in business this year! The business was formed in 1961 by my father Charlie Denham, at the very young age of 20. Things were certainly very different then, and he has many interesting tales to tell.
As tough as things can get running a business, Charlie has always knuckled down and batted on through thick and think, steering the business through many difficult times. For the last few years, he has taken care of our Christmas tree fields – the trees need a great deal of time, care and attention – planting, shaping, feeding and the like. We are extremely grateful that he is still enthusiastic and keen to be involved. His knowledge and wisdom are priceless, and his ‘never give up’ attitude has passed through the generations. We feel very lucky that we get to work with our Dad (and Grandad) almost every day!
The obvious challenges of running a business continue, but Tommy Topsoil continues to go from strength to strength. We pride ourselves on supplying quality products at the best possible price, and our range of soils have become well reputed throughout Yorkshire and beyond.
We now employ three generations, with additional staff from the local area. We do the majority of deliveries ourselves, to Halifax, Bradford, Huddersfield and the Calder Valley, and the outskirts. Orders further afield are generally delivered by a nationwide pallet carrier.
We continue to remain optimistic, and are continually looking for ways to improve our products, and keep customer service at the top of our priority list.

The longevity and survival of the business for most of these years is down to founder Charlie Denham, who has driven the company through many tough times, adapting and diversifying along the way, navigating several recessions and economic climates, along with changing customer demands.
Tommy Topsoil is well renowned throughout Yorkshire, and beyond. Our customer base range includes cottage gardeners, landscapers, schools and construction companies, along with TV companies and professional gardening TV presenters.
Our products include everything you need for your flowers, plants, vegetables and lawns to flourish – including quality soils, composts, barks, mulches, fertilizers and turf. Over recent years, Christmas Trees, and winter fuels have been introduced, further expanding our company’s offerings.
A cash and carry service is available, along with home delivery to an ever increasing customer base throughout Yorkshire, and nationwide deliveries are taken care of by a local pallet company.
The Tommy Topsoil team includes several family members alongside Charlie, including son Andy, and grandson Edward, who ensure the quality remains consistent, at the best possible price. Supported by further family members and additional employees from the local community, the team work together well, to maintain the great service we are reputed for.
