Lawn Care Advice

Turf can be laid all year round, however, frosty conditions are to be avoided. Laying turf in extended periods of hot and dry weather will require additional care and attention. Lawn seed is best sown in Spring or Autumn.

Preparation for laying

  1. Remove all vegetation before cultivation
  2. Your soil should be forked over, or cultivated to at least 100mm deep, then rake over to obtain a fine tilth. Walk side stepping to firm, then rake again. Repeat 2-3 times. Remove all stones and small debris as you rake.
  3. Water dry soil before laying the turf. Soil must be thoroughly moist to a depth of 75mm.

Laying your turf

  1. For best results, your new Rolawn turf must be unrolled and laid within 24 hours, during the Autumn/Winter period and within 12 hours in Spring/Summer.
  2. Start laying down your longest straight side, butting the turf closely, end to end. Do not stretch the turf, or leave gaps. The second row of turf is laid alongside the first row, with staggered joints, like laying bricks with the half bonding system. After 2 rows have been laid, work off planks, avoid walking on the turf at this stage if possible. Continue to the end of the job, trimming the turf where required with a kitchen knife, or similar.

Watering

  1. New laid turf should be watered heavily, immediately.
  2. Continue watering heavily every day for 2 weeks after laying. Water must go through the turf and well into the soil below.
  3. After the first 2 weeks, water heavily once per week, during Summer. In Winter, turf should not require water at all, after the second week.

Mowing

  1. Rolawn Turf is supplied cut to 25mm. Mow your new lawn as soon as it needs it, but not before it has rooted. The height of the cut is important. Aim to keep the grass at a height of 25mm.
  2. Don’t let your grass grow too long! If it does get long, reduce the height gradually. NEVER mow more than one third of the grass at any one time!

Fertilising your lawn

  1. Turf should be fed 2-3 times per year, with a suitable lawn feed, such as our liquid plant food, pelleted hen manure, fish, blood & bone meal, or another alternative lawn food.
  2. To keep your lawn in optimum condition, it is advisable to give your lawn a good feed with a blend of lawn top dressing – one bag to 10m2, together with 125g of calcified plus (seaweed alternative) to every 1sq metre of turf.
